New A Level opportunities at Barnsley Sixth Form College

Barnsley Sixth Form College will be offering five new A Level subjects from September 2025 in IT: Data Analytics, Health and Social Care, Applied Science, Engineering and Early Childhood Development.

As more data is generated and used in today’s world, the demand for Data Analysts has increased significantly, showing how important data-driven decision-making is across different industries. IT: Data Analytics will help students develop skills in statistics and analysis and how to manipulate and visualise data effectively.

In Health and Social Care, students will have the opportunity to explore how health affects individuals in society. The course focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to work in related fields such as nursing, social work, public health or midwifery.

Applied Science explores the key topics that are important in biology, chemistry and physics. Through a combination of theoretical study and hands-on experience, students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to support their progression to higher education.

For students who are looking into Engineering, our qualification focuses on engineering data and applying mathematical procedures in mechanical and electrical contexts. The course will allow you to create three-dimensional (3D) models and two-dimensional (2D) detailed drawings using a computer-aided design (CAD) system.

The Early Childhood Development course explores the developmental progress from birth up to eight years of age. Students will investigate the health and safety and safeguarding responsibilities of an individual working in an early-year setting, the influence of theories and the benefits of play and learning activities for children.

Kelly Rinaldi, Barnsley Sixth Form College Principal, said: “I’m delighted to be offering five new qualifications from September; the new Alternative Academic Qualifications will further support our students to progress onto their chosen next steps. Equivalent to one A Level in size, it is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills and will take two years to complete.

“I am particularly excited to bring in the Engineering qualification as we have a number of students who aspire to move into this career pathway.”
