Students from Global Sevilla School in Jakarta, Indonesia, have recently gained an insight into student life at Barnsley Sixth Form College and University Campus Barnsley (UCB).
The two week visit incorporated timetabled days participating in A Level classes within the new Sixth Form building and experiencing life as a business student at UCB learning amongst peers.
The group of eight students shared the rest of their time in the UK exploring a handful of universities including the University of York, Leeds Trinity, Sheffield Hallam, the University of Oxford and the University of Gloucestershire to see the progression options available after completing their A Level studies. They also experienced the lifestyle, culture and transport system that come hand-in-hand with being a student in the UK, to gain an insight into life studying within the country and to help them decide if it could be a suitable choice for them in the future.
The visit is part of the growing international partnership between the college and Global Sevilla School with the students being the second group to experience student life in the local area.
Global Sevilla student, Auriel Abraham Karlam said: “The UK is a lot more traditional than I thought it would be. The people here are really friendly and amongst the many countries I have visited the UK has the most welcoming people. The culture, music and food is great.
“Visiting Barnsley College’s many campuses including the Sixth Form and UCB has been a great experience and I have really enjoyed using the wide range of equipment and facilities on offer. Barnsley is in one of the top three places I would study in the UK, overcrowded cities do not appeal to me; I love the close knit community here, even though the town is smaller than most places I have been, I feel like I’ve been part of something larger and would love to return in the near future.”
Zinnia Baker Head of International Centres at the college added: “This was such an important visit to both Barnsley and Indonesia. Global Sevilla students were able to experience life as a UK student and meet with locals both in Barnsley and in other cities such as Leeds and Sheffield. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was great to witness the students’ reactions as they discovered new things about the UK.
“It is great to build international links and to introduce Barnsley as a place of study within the UK with great opportunities for progression and as a place of interest, culture and success. We look forward to strengthening our links with Indonesia in the future and welcoming further groups of students to our college.”
