Sixth Form Fine Art Students’ Inspiring Trip to Liverpool’s Art Galleries

Our second year Fine Art students recently embarked on an enriching trip to Liverpool, where they had the opportunity to explore the extensive collections at the Walker Art Gallery and the Lady Lever Art Gallery. This visit was not only a chance to admire the diverse range of artworks but also a crucial step in preparing for their final exam projects.

At the Walker Art Gallery, students were captivated by the impressive array of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts spanning centuries. The gallery’s collection, which includes works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Turner, and Hockney, provided a wealth of inspiration for the students’ own creative endeavours.

The journey continued at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, where the students were equally enthralled by the exquisite pieces on display. The gallery’s focus on fine and decorative arts, including masterpieces by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Burne-Jones, offered a unique perspective on different artistic styles and techniques.

“The trip has enabled me to take my own inspiration for my personal project, such as different techniques, concepts and mediums. My favourite style was the renaissance paintings that I saw, I plan to take influence from these for my own studies in the future.”

Throughout the trip, the students diligently photographed and sketched the artworks, capturing the essence of each piece to inform their exam projects. This hands-on experience allowed them to engage deeply with the art, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of the creative process.

As they prepare for their final exams in May, the insights and inspiration gained from this trip will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping their unique and informed projects. The Year 13 Fine Art students returned from Liverpool with a renewed passion for art and a wealth of ideas to explore in their upcoming work.

Darcey Wheater, a Fine Art, Mathematics and Physics A Level student, said: “I enjoyed having the opportunity to go and visit a new city and seeing lots of unique art. On the trip I learnt new and interesting concepts behind artists work, and I also learnt the history behind many older pieces. This will help me in my studies as I have experienced new unique concepts that could influence my work. From the trip I will take away new inspiration from the art I saw to inform my own project.”

Francesca Wells, a Fine Art, Criminology and Geography A Level student, added: “The thing I enjoyed the most was having the opportunity to see different artwork in person from a range of time periods. I was fascinated by the upkeep and quality of the paintings. I learnt about how art can take a range of forms and artists can express their thoughts and feelings in a number of ways than just a basic painting. The trip has enabled me to take my own inspiration for my personal project, such as different techniques, concepts and mediums. My favourite style was the renaissance paintings that I saw, I plan to take influence from these for my own studies in the future.”
