Sixth Form prepares James for Navy life

Former Sixth Form College student James Hughes is on course to become one of the youngest commissioned officers in the Royal Navy.

The 19-year-old, of Stairfoot, started his Navy training at Dartmouth in May after completing A Levels in Maths, Physics and Geography in the summer of 2016.

James believes the experience of studying at the Sixth Form College has served as good preparation for Navy life and is set to become a Warfare Officer before starting the second phase of his training.

He said: “There are similarities between studying for A Levels and naval training, as they are both intense experiences. My studies also prepared me well for the academic work which I have undertaken during my training.

“I am really enjoying it. Teamwork is my favourite aspect of the training, we all work together and there is a unique camaraderie amongst us. The instructors push us in a positive manner to reach the standards we are capable of.”

The former Horizon Community College pupil felt the support from tutors was one of the most positive aspects of his time at Barnsley Sixth Form College.

He added: “My time at the Sixth Form College was really good. The tutors take care of you and are prepared to offer as much extra support as you need to enable you to get the best results possible.”
