Our Film Studies students learnt how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on cinema from the owner of Barnsley’s Parkway Cinema, Rob Younger.
Rob held an online question and answer session with the students in which he spoke about declining attendance numbers during the times Parkway Cinema has been able to open during the pandemic, despite there not being a single reported COVID-19 outbreak due to cinemas and many safety and social distancing measures being in place.
The session also covered the topic of online streaming, its effect on the cinema industry and the future of cinema.
Film Studies tutor Kat Thorpe said: “It was a really eye-opening experience for the students to hear Rob’s views, as a local independent cinema owner, of how COVID-19 has affected the cinema industry.
“Rob’s passion and enthusiasm for film is evident and we’re looking forward to taking up his kind offer of a special screening at Parkway Cinema, when we are able to do so, to show the students the projection room where they can see behind the scenes how both digital and film projectors work.”
