Three Barnsley Sixth Form College students achieved Silver and Copper awards in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, a nationwide competition which is run annually, aimed at students studying A Level Chemistry.
The 90-minute written exam, crafted to assess students’ A Level Chemistry knowledge, is intended to stretch and challenge them. Created by a seasoned team of tutors and university chemists, it aims to inspire students to go beyond the curriculum and to think about science as they would in a university setting.
Brandon McKnight and Epernay Dale secured the Silver award, while Daniel Sutherland won the Copper award, after addressing two questions related to arsenic and its historical applications, as well as the chemistry of forever chemicals and their environmental impact.
Epernay Dale said: “I found the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge hard because it was different to the types of questions that are in a chemistry exam, but I found it interesting to see different aspects of chemistry and trying to work the questions out.
“After doing the challenge, I didn’t expect to get a certificate so was very happy when I found out I had got silver.”
