Original artwork by our Art and Design tutor Richard Kitson is to be displayed in the town’s Cooper Gallery over the next two months.
Richard’s free exhibition ‘A Decade of Painting of Life, 2008-2018’ was launched earlier this month and includes over 25 portraits and drawings which were created from life rather than photographic reference.
The exhibition follows on from Richard’s appearance on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year programme and includes life drawing and portrait workshops which are open to the public. Richard has taught with us for four years having previously taught at Barnsley College.
Each of the paintings displayed required the subject to pose for at least two hours a week over a period of months and in some cases years, enabling Richard to capture their likeness after observing them in both motion and stillness.
Richard, 36, of Birdwell, said: “My relationship with the Cooper Gallery goes back to when I volunteered there as a student so to have my first solo exhibition there is quite fitting. It’s also on the doorstep of the Sixth Form College and Barnsley College so students can see the work and hopefully be inspired to apply for their own exhibitions in the future.”
